NAVIGATION, WITHOUT THE MAP

Experimenting with minimal interfaces.

project: row on three phones, showing a live map, ride telemetry with speed, ride time and distance, and settings for smartwatch sync and Google Maps mirroring, beside highlights for navigation, telemetry, watch sync and Google Maps.

THE PROBLEM

Riders can't safely look at a phone map on a bike, many smartwatches can't show turn-by-turn directions, and dedicated bike navigators cost too much.

THE IDEA

A hybrid of software and a device, working name project: row. The software puts turn-by-turn guidance on the smartwatch a rider already owns; the device will be an affordable navigation display built for bikes.

EXECUTION

The software is a phone app paired with the rider's smartwatch. It takes the route from Google Maps, sends each turn to the watch, and shows live ride stats such as speed, distance and ride time.
